Cloud and hosting / Since our hosting days
Move the server out of the closet, without moving the risk with it.
Computer Plus started out hosting websites and servers in 2006, so we know the unglamorous parts of hosting: backups, patching, access, renewals and cost. Today we help small offices move file shares and line-of-business applications to the cloud, or decide that keeping a server on site is the better answer.
Options
Three ways to run your business apps
SaaS first
If your practice management, accounting or document system offers a vendor-hosted version, that is usually the simplest path. We handle the migration, user setup and single sign-on, and we keep your data exports and backups under your control.
Cloud server
For software that still needs Windows Server, we build a right-sized virtual server in Microsoft Azure or another reputable cloud, with private access, patching, backups and a monthly cost review.
Stay on site
Some offices are better served by a modern on-site server, for example with large imaging files or a slow internet connection. We will tell you when that is true and manage it the same way.
Shared responsibility
What the cloud provider does not do for you
Cloud providers secure their data centers and platforms. Accounts, access rules, patching inside your server, and backups of your data generally stay your responsibility. That split is easy to miss, and it is where most cloud problems come from. We take the customer side of that responsibility and document it.
- Access through a VPN, a private gateway or single sign-on with MFA, never an open remote desktop port.
- Backups stored separately from the server, with a restore test after migration and on a schedule after that.
- Budgets and alerts so a forgotten test machine does not double the bill.
- An exit plan: how to export your data if you change vendors.
Migration
How a move works
- Inventory the apps, data, users and vendor requirements.
- Pick the option for each workload and get vendor sign-off where needed.
- Build and test with a pilot group.
- Cut over over a weekend or evening, with the old system kept read-only for a period.
- Decommission the old server and wipe or destroy the drives with a certificate.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you still sell web hosting?
Our hosting is now focused on the business systems we manage for clients. Legacy website hosting services were retired; if you need a new website host, we can recommend options and help with the move.
Is the cloud cheaper than a server?
Sometimes. A cloud server trades a large hardware purchase for a monthly bill. We compare a realistic five-year cost for both, including backup, licenses and support time, before recommending anything.
Where is our data stored?
In the region you choose. For clients outside the United States we can place cloud servers and backups in a nearby region when local privacy rules or client contracts require it.
What about our files?
For most offices, Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive or Google Drive replace the file server well, with version history and sharing controls. We plan the folder structure and permissions before moving anything.
Who do we call if the hosted app is down?
Us. We triage first and then work the case with the software vendor or cloud provider on your behalf.
