Switching IT providers / Written exit promise
Changing IT companies should not feel like a hostage negotiation.
Slow replies, no reports, and a provider who holds your passwords: those are the reasons most offices call us. Here is how a switch works, what we need from your current provider, and the promise we make so you never end up in that position again.

Signs it is time
Why offices switch
Repeating yourself
Every ticket goes to someone new and you explain the problem again.
No proof of work
You pay every month but cannot see patch status, backup results or what was done.
Surprise bills
Project costs show up on the invoice without a quote.
Locked out
Your provider holds the admin passwords to your own email and network.
Nobody plans
Hardware dies before anyone mentions it is old, and renewals sneak up.
Security questions you cannot answer
An insurer or client asks for MFA and backup evidence and you have none.
Our exit promise
You own your accounts, admin logins and documentation
- Your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace tenant, domain registrations, firewall and Wi-Fi accounts are registered to your business, not to Computer Plus.
- You hold a break-glass administrator login for each critical system from the start of onboarding.
- Your network diagram, device list, account list and configuration notes live in your portal and are yours to export.
- If you leave, we hand over admin access and documentation and walk the next provider through the environment. We do not hold anything back until the last invoice.
This promise is about ownership and handover. Contract terms are set out separately in your written agreement.
How a switch works
From first call to fully handed over
- Assessment. We review your environment read-only and list what we will need from the current provider.
- Notice and overlap. You give notice under your current contract. We can begin onboarding while it runs out, so there is no gap in support.
- Access handover. Admin credentials, registrar logins, license accounts and documentation move to you first, then we are added with named accounts.
- Tool swap. We install Ares RMM and our endpoint protection, then confirm the old provider’s agents are removed so nothing is left with remote access.
- Stabilize. Backups verified with a restore test, MFA gaps closed, patching brought current.
- Documented. Within about 30 days for a typical small office, you receive the documentation pack and your first report.
Checklist
What to request from your current IT provider
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Global admin and break-glass accounts for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace | Control of email, files and identity |
| Domain registrar and DNS logins | Email and website keep working through the switch |
| Firewall, switch and Wi-Fi admin accounts (UniFi, Meraki or other) | Network access without a factory reset |
| Backup console access and the location of every backup copy | Your history is not lost when their tool is removed |
| License and subscription list with renewal dates | No surprise lapses |
| Line-of-business software vendor contacts and admin logins | Practice management, accounting and document systems keep running |
| Network diagram, device list and any written documentation | A faster, safer handover |
| List of remote access tools installed | So every old agent can be removed |
FAQ
Switching questions
We are still under contract. Can we start now?
Usually yes. Onboarding can begin before your current agreement ends, and we schedule the access handover around your notice period.
Will there be downtime during the switch?
The goal is none for staff. Most of the work is behind the scenes. Changes that could interrupt anyone are scheduled after hours and announced in advance.
How long does switching take?
For a small office, onboarding is usually complete within about 30 days. Larger or multi-site offices take longer, and we give you a timeline in the quote.
What if our current provider will not cooperate?
Most handovers go fine. If credentials are withheld, we can often recover access through the platform owner, such as Microsoft, Google or your domain registrar, because the accounts belong to your business.
Can you work alongside our in-house person during the switch?
Yes. That is often the smoothest path, and our Co-Managed plan is built for it.
